The program contained a virus and was deleted: Cannot download from IE

Lately I have come across this issue where many of you are unable to download any file from Internet Explorer 8,9 and 10.

I work for an online technical support where many customer come across this annoying issue where it disables them from downloading any file. And this is not only restricted to  IE but also with Chrome and Firefox.

I started researching on this issues and came across many websites and forums that guided me to remove AVG which actually helped many of them, but not in my case because customer did not have AVG installed at all.

I was dealing with two computers at the same with the same problem. I ran every scan possible on earth that Google could provide with no luck. I came to know that the system is not infected at all and is working fine. However I noticed that the updates were not working and in some cases the Microsoft Essentials was corrupted. Here is how I fixed the issue.

STEP 1: Fixing the Download Issue

  • First close all the windows that are open on your system.
  • Unplug or remove any disk or pen drives from the system. Now lets restart your system in safe mode.
  • When the computer starts you will see your computer’s hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows XP, Vista or 7 Advanced Boot Options. If you are using Windows 8, press the Windows key + C, and then click Settings. Click Powerhold down Shift on your keyboard and click Restart, then click on Troubleshoot and select Advanced options. In the Advanced Options screen, select Startup Settings, then click on Restart.
  • If you are using Windows XP, Vista or 7 in the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking , and then press ENTER

  • Once your system has booted up in safe mode with networking. Please do not panic, I know the screen is black, smaller with huge icons. That is the normal desktop in safe mode.
  • Now click on Windows Orb or the start button at the bottom left corner and then click on computer
  • Click on your default OS drive (in my case its c:) and then go to program files folder.
  • Search for windows defender folder and rename the file to windows defender.old and close the window
  • Now again click on start button and then go to control panel -> programs and features and search Microsoft Security Essentials. If you have MSE installed then restart your system and then uninstall it from Normal mode.
  • Now check if you are able to download or not. I am pretty sure you will be able to download files from IE or any other browsers.
Step 2 : Fixing Defender and MSE.
  • Now that you are able to download you can go ahead download antivirus tool to fix if there are any virus related issues.
  • Download Malwarebytes and scan your system for any trojan or malware on your system.
  • I would recommend that you scan your system at-least with three virus scanner, the link for them is below.
  1. Malwarebytes
  2. Hitman Pro 32 bit
  3. Hitman Pro 64 bit
  4. Rogue Killer
  • These scanner should be able to fix any infection on your system
However if you feel that this is a lot too much and you cant do it, email me and I will fix these issues for FREE.
